Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, commonly abbreviated NAD+, is a coenzyme present in all living cells. The molecule consists of two nucleotides linked by phosphate groups, with adenine and a nicotinamide ring as its principal features. In its oxidized form, the nicotinamide ring can accept a hydride ion, becoming NADH. This reversible conversion places NAD+ at the center of many electron-transfer reactions. Its role as a redox carrier is well established across bacteria, plants, fungi, and animals.
Beyond redox chemistry, NAD+ acts as a substrate for several enzyme families. ADP-ribosyltransferases, sirtuins, and CD38 ectoenzymes cleave the molecule into nicotinamide and ADP-ribose or related products. These reactions connect NAD+ availability to processes such as DNA repair, chromatin modification, and calcium signaling. Because the coenzyme is used in both electron transfer and signaling, cells maintain separate pools in compartments including the cytosol, mitochondria, and nucleus. The relative sizes and regulation of those pools remain active areas of study.
In glycolysis, NAD+ accepts electrons during the oxidation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate, forming NADH. The tricarboxylic acid cycle and fatty acid oxidation also generate NADH, which donates electrons to the mitochondrial electron transport chain. This flow supports ATP synthesis and helps maintain the redox balance of the cell. Other dehydrogenases use NAD+ as a cofactor for biosynthetic reductions and detoxification reactions. NADH is later reoxidized to sustain continued flux through these pathways.
Beyond electron transfer, NAD+ serves as a substrate for enzymes that cleave the molecule and transfer ADP-ribose units. Sirtuins, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases, and CD38 consume NAD+ in regulatory reactions. These activities link NAD+ availability to DNA repair, chromatin modification, calcium signaling, and metabolic stress responses. Because consumption can exceed biosynthesis under some conditions, cellular NAD+ levels are dynamic rather than fixed. Enzyme affinity and local synthesis also influence how much NAD+ is available for signaling.

Biosynthesis of NAD+ starts from nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, or nicotinamide riboside through salvage pathways. A rate-limiting enzyme, nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase, converts nicotinamide to nicotinamide mononucleotide. Further coupling with ATP yields NAD+. In mammals, the liver and muscle can synthesize NAD+ from dietary precursors, but tissue levels vary widely. Researchers study these pathways to understand age-related changes, metabolic disorders, and neurodegeneration. Direct causal links between NAD+ decline and disease remain an active area of investigation.
NAD+ is a dinucleotide composed of adenine, ribose, and nicotinamide groups joined by phosphate linkages. It serves as a coenzyme in oxidoreductase reactions, cycling between oxidized NAD+ and reduced NADH. The molecule is water-soluble and occurs in all living cells. Its nicotinamide ring accepts hydride ions during catabolic reactions, linking substrate oxidation to electron transport. This redox couple supports ATP production and helps maintain cytosolic and mitochondrial redox balance in many cell types.
Beyond redox catalysis, NAD+ is a substrate for enzymes that transfer ADP-ribose or remove acetyl groups from proteins. Sirtuins and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases consume NAD+ and release nicotinamide as a byproduct. These reactions connect cellular energy status to gene regulation, DNA repair, and stress responses. Because NAD+ is used rather than merely recycled in such signaling, its concentration reflects both biosynthesis and consumption. The balance between salvage and de novo synthesis pathways determines available pools in different tissues.
In aqueous solution, NAD+ is most stable under mildly acidic to neutral conditions and degrades faster at high pH or elevated temperature. The molecule can hydrolyze at the pyrophosphate bond or undergo nonenzymatic cyclization. Buffers, chelating agents, and cold temperatures slow these losses during analysis. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are generally avoided because they can promote degradation and concentration changes. Light exposure is also controlled, though NAD+ is less photolabile than some related nucleotides.
Commercial NAD+ is supplied as a solid, often as the free acid or a salt, and purity is verified by chromatographic methods. Laboratories typically store it desiccated at minus 20 degrees Celsius or below. Working solutions are prepared fresh because even sterile aqueous solutions can lose activity over hours to days depending on pH and temperature. Documentation may include a certificate of analysis, an assay value, and a recommended retest date. Researchers should verify identity and purity when results depend on precise cofactor concentrations.
Misoprostol can also be used to induce termination of pregnancy. It can be used on its own or following administration of mifepristone. Misoprostol may be used to terminate a pregnancy; typically only in the first trimester. Later abortions are less common and are usually performed surgically, at least in the United States. For first-trimester abortion, it is dissolved in the cheek or under the tongue; for later abortions, it can also be given as a vaginal suppository. Misoprostol may also be used to ripen the cervix in preparation for surgical abortion. Misoprostol is given orally for the treatment of ulcers. It interacts with prostaglandin receptors in the stomach to reduce secretion of stomach acids. It increases the production of gastric mucus, which forms a protective coating against stomach acid. Finally, misoprostol encourages the production of bicarbonate, which is a base that counteracts stomach acid. The medication can also protect against stomach ulcers in people who take NSAIDs such as ibuprofen on a daily basis. Misoprostol can cause nausea, stomach pain, and stomach cramps. In rare cases, it may lead to uterine rupture, which requires immediate emergency surgery.

Some genetically modified plants are purely ornamental. They are modified for flower color, fragrance, flower shape and plant architecture. The first genetically modified ornamentals commercialized altered color. Carnations were released in 1997, with the most popular genetically modified organism, a blue rose (actually lavender or mauve) created in 2004. The roses are sold in Japan, the United States, and Canada. Other genetically modified ornamentals include Chrysanthemum and Petunia. As well as increasing aesthetic value there are plans to develop ornamentals that use less water or are resistant to the cold, which would allow them to be grown outside their natural environments. It has been proposed to genetically modify some plant species threatened by extinction to be resistant to invasive plants and diseases, such as the emerald ash borer in North American and the fungal disease, Ceratocystis platani, in European plane trees. The papaya ringspot virus devastated papaya trees in Hawaii in the twentieth century until transgenic papaya plants were given pathogen-derived resistance. However, genetic modification for conservation in plants remains mainly speculative. A unique concern is that a transgenic species may no longer bear enough resemblance to the original species to truly claim that the original species is being conserved. Instead, the transgenic species may be genetically different enough to be considered a new species, thus diminishing the conservation worth of genetic modification.
==== Absorption ==== There has been little research on psilocybin's bioavailability. Its oral bioavailability, as its active form psilocin, was about 55.0% (± ~20%) relative to intravenous administration in one small older study (n=3). After oral administration, psilocybin is detectable in the blood circulation within 20 to 40 minutes, and psilocin is detectable after 30 minutes. The mean time to peak levels for psilocin is 1.05 to 3.71 hours in different studies, with most around 2 hours and the upper limit of 3.71 hours being an outlier. Psilocybin, in terms of psilocin, shows clear linear or dose-dependent pharmacokinetics. Maximal concentrations of psilocin were 11 ng/mL, 17 ng/mL, and 21 ng/mL with oral psilocybin doses of 15, 25, and 30 mg psilocybin, respectively. The maximal levels of psilocin have been found to range from 8.2 ng/mL to 37.6 ng/mL across a dose range of 14 to 42 mg. The dose-normalized peak concentration of psilocin is about 0.8 ng/mL/mg. The interindividual variability in the pharmacokinetics of psilocybin is relatively small. There is a very strong positive correlation between dose and psilocin peak levels (R2 = 0.95). The effects of food on the pharmacokinetics of psilocybin have not been reported and are unknown, but no clear sign of food effects has been observed in preliminary analyses. It has also been said that food might delay absorption, reduce peak levels, and reduce bioavailability.

==== Removing excess coolant ==== After the area to be branded is cleaned and soaked with alcohol, the brand is removed from its coolant. It is very important to shake the brand vigorously to remove as much coolant as possible from its working surface. This is necessary because drips of coolant are capable of freezing an animal's skin on their own as they roll down its body, producing a permanent drip mark down the hide of the animal. It is also necessary because the dynamic viscosity of ethanol greatly increases at cryogenic temperatures, rising more than eight-fold from room temperatures. The thicker alcohol necessitates a more thorough shaking than one would give the same brand covered in water.
As lieutenant governor in 2016, Newsom was the official proponent of Proposition 63. The ballot measure required a background check and California Department of Justice authorization to purchase ammunition, among other gun control regulations. In response to the 2019 mass shooting in Virginia Beach, Newsom called for nationwide background checks on people purchasing ammunition. Later that year, he responded to the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting by stating his support for the Second Amendment and saying he would like national cooperation controlling "weapons of goddamned mass destruction". He also said, "These shootings overwhelmingly, almost exclusively, are males, boys, 'men'—I put in loose quotes. I do think that is missing in the national conversation." On June 10, 2021, Newsom called federal Judge Roger Benitez "a stone cold ideologue" and "a wholly owned subsidiary of the gun lobby of the National Rifle Association" after Benitez struck down California's statewide ban on assault weapons. While the ban remained in place as the state appealed the ruling, Newsom proposed legislation that would empower private citizens to enforce the ban after the United States Supreme Court declined to strike down the Texas Heartbeat Act, which empowers private citizens to report unauthorized abortions. In 2022, Newsom signed gun control bills passed by the California Legislature.
Although Mr Galloway, Mr Halford and Mr Al-Mukhtar have confirmed that they were unaware of the source of Mr Zureikat's donations, the Commission has concluded that the charity trustees should have made further enquiries when accepting such large single and cumulative donations to satisfy themselves as to their origin and legitimacy. The Commission's conclusion is that the charity trustees did not properly discharge their duty of care as trustees to the Appeal in respect of these donations ... The Commission is also concerned, having considered the totality of the evidence before it, that Mr Galloway may also have known of the connection between the Appeal and the Programme. Galloway, in response, stated: "I've always disputed the Commission's retrospective view that a campaign to win a change in national and international policy – a political campaign – was, in fact, a charity".
The State Council said inspectors would target edible oil trade fairs and wholesale markets and called for inspections of oil being used at restaurants, school cafeterias, work canteens and kitchens at construction sites. The State Council also stated that businesses that use recycled oil would be forced to close temporarily or lose their business license while peddlers who sell the oil could be criminally prosecuted. In October 2013, a man from eastern China's Jiangsu Province was sentenced to life imprisonment for profiting heavily from making and selling gutter oil. In January 2014, Zhu Chuanfeng was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, and his brothers Zhu Chuanqing and Zhu Chuanbo were sentenced to life in prison for selling gutter oil.

amino acid Any of a class of organic compounds whose basic structural formula includes a central carbon atom bonded to amine and carboxyl functional groups and to a variable side chain. Out of nearly 500 known amino acids, a set of 20 are coded for by the standard genetic code and incorporated into long polymeric chains as the building blocks of peptides and hence of polypeptides and proteins. The specific sequences of amino acids in the polypeptide chains that form a protein are ultimately responsible for determining the protein's structure and function.
Analyses on model and non-model eukaryotic proteomes have revealed that LCRs are frequently found in proteins involved in binding of nucleic acids (DNA or RNA), in transcription, receptor activity, development, reproduction and immunity whereas metabolic proteins are depleted of LCRs. A bioinformatics study of the UniProt annotation of LCR containing proteins observed that 44% (9751/22259) of Bacterial and 44% (662/1521) of Archaeal LCRs are detected in proteins of unknown function, however, a significant number of proteins of known function (from many different species), especially those involved in translation and the ribosome, nucleic acid binding, metal-ion binding, and protein folding were also found to contain LCRs.
Δp is the pressure difference between the two ends, L is the length of pipe, μ is the dynamic viscosity, Q is the volumetric flow rate, R is the pipe radius, A is the cross-sectional area of pipe. The equation does not hold close to the pipe entrance. The equation fails in the limit of low viscosity, wide and/or short pipe. Low viscosity or a wide pipe may result in turbulent flow, making it necessary to use more complex models, such as the Darcy–Weisbach equation. The ratio of length to radius of a pipe should be greater than 1/48 of the Reynolds number for the Hagen–Poiseuille law to be valid. If the pipe is too short, the Hagen–Poiseuille equation may result in unphysically high flow rates; the flow is bounded by Bernoulli's principle, under less restrictive conditions, by
In February 2013, Essendon announced that they had asked the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) to investigate the supplements program that Dank had overseen at their club during the 2012 season. A former player, Kyle Reimers, had claimed that the players were asked to sign waivers and were injected with supplements that were "pushing the boundaries". Another former player, Mark McVeigh countered that the injections were only vitamins and all were completely legal and not on any World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned substance list. Dank left Essendon at the end of the 2012 season, and high-performance manager Dean 'The Weapon' Robinson was suspended from the club after the announcement of the investigation. Stephen Dank controversially admitted to a Fairfax journalist that he had been using thymosin beta 4 on Essendon players. When journalist Nick McKenzie pointed out that that drug was prohibited by WADA under its S2 classification, Dank hesitated and then seemed extremely surprised: "Well, that must have just only come in this year and I will get someone to speak to ASADA about that. That's just mind-blowing." After 24 hours, Dank informed Fairfax media that he was actually really talking about thymomodulin which was a permitted substance. In 2015, the AFL Tribunal found him guilty of trafficking in a number of illicit supplements and banned him from any association with the AFL for life. Since most Australian sporting organisations honour sanctions imposed by other leagues, this had the effect of blackballing Dank from major Australian sport.

NAD+ is a coenzyme found in living cells and is the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It accepts electrons in redox reactions and also serves as a substrate for certain signaling and repair enzymes.
NAD+ becomes NADH when it accepts a hydride ion during oxidation-reduction reactions. NADH then donates electrons to other molecules, after which the carrier can return to the NAD+ form.
No, nicotinamide is a smaller molecule and a component of NAD+. Cells can use nicotinamide to rebuild NAD+ through the salvage pathway.
NAD+ is the oxidized form, while NADH is the reduced form carrying an additional hydride equivalent. The pair participates in reversible electron transfer reactions. Their ratio helps indicate the redox state of a compartment.
